Understanding the Houses
The twelve houses represent different areas of life experience. Each house governs specific domains, relationships, and life themes. The houses are calculated based on your time and place of birth, creating a unique map for your life.
House Classifications:
- Kendra (Angular): Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 - Power houses of action and manifestation
- Trikona (Trinal): Houses 1, 5, 9 - Houses of dharma and good fortune
- Upachaya (Growth): Houses 3, 6, 10, 11 - Improving with time through effort
- Dusthana (Difficult): Houses 6, 8, 12 - Challenging areas requiring transformation
The House System
In Vedic astrology, houses are called bhavas. The 1st house (Ascendant/Lagna) begins at the eastern horizon at the time of birth. Each house represents approximately 30 degrees of the zodiac, though the exact boundaries depend on your birth time and location.
Planets placed in houses bring their energy to those life areas. The sign on each house cusp (bhava madhya) and its ruling planet (bhava karaka) further modify how that house expresses in your life.
